Solar System Cupcakes Before & After

Photo Title: Chocolate Buttermilk Cupcakes with Vanilla Almond Frosting (Solar System Cupcakes

Blog Name: goodLife {eats}

Technical Details:

Camera: Canon EOS 50D
Lens: Canon 50 mm 1.4
ISO speed: 125
Aperature: f1.8
Shutter Speed: 1/160
Flash: off
White Balance: Manually set using a gray card

Set up: Placed a black foam board on my island and a black poster board in back to create a solid black background. Used some plastic glow in the dark stars around the cupcakes and a small yellow dessert plate to be the sun. I clipped a desk lap on the island and directed it at the yellow plate to make it look like the sun was shining instead of flat color.

Edits: Bumped the contrast and saturdation by +10 in Photoshop CS

Kristen here… you may have noticed that Katie got a new camera! She was one of our previous contributors who did amazing things with a point and shoot, but she decided to make the upgrade to a DSLR. Beautiful work, Katie!

The monthly contribution prize is back! For the month of April, anyone who comments on an April post, submits a behind the scenes photo to Culinary Snapshot or participates in our upcoming Through My Lens event will be entered to win a $50 gift card to CB2… Crate & Barrel’s outlet that has great items for food photography props. The giveaway will be closed on April 30th, and the winner will be selected through the Random Number Generator close to May 1st. Please make sure to leave a way to be contacted so I can get a hold of you if you are a winner. (You can earn multiple entries by commenting on each April post, submitting more than one photo, etc).

I fell in love with CB2 on a recent trip to Texas. They in no way have paid for or sponsored this giveaway. It is just a super cool place to shop!

This would be an awesome idea for a kid’s birthday. I like how you used the yellow plate for the sun.

Out of this world! :) So did the desk lamp have a regular incandescent bulb in it? Or a special “natural light” bulb?

Marisa – I believe it was actually a plant light from when I tried to grow herbs indoors over the winter 2 years ago. I haven’t used the lamp since then, it was just in the cabinet and I thought to grab it because that’s where the black poster board was too.

I teach the solar system. Maybe if my students are really good I’ll use this idea as a reward. THANKS!

Cool set-up! I like how the cupcakes are positioned. I only wish the yellow plate were a tad smaller; however, it was still very creative!

It’s good to know that even great photographers don’t mind a little bump from photoshop!
Also, have you been to the Crate and Barrel outlet in San Marcos? Oy-vey!

I was the first comment, doesn’t look like my email came through! wschmaleoe@olatheschools.com
Shared your cupcakes with my co worker, her son’s bday is coming up…..

Cute idea for kids’ cupcakes and great idea for a giveaway. Love Crate & Barrel, but some of their goods can be so expensive (never visited one of their outlets though—sounds like fun).

What a great (and tasty) way to teach. Love it!

Congratulations on the new camera! I love this idea. I also love seeing the setup and the final photo. My husband works sometimes as a model and it’s fascinating to watch all the work and busy-ness that goes into one shot. ‘course, they never tell me how they edited the photo in the end…

I am so glad I found your site! I think I’m in love! lol

22 Caitlin April 12, 2010 at 9:27 am

I really like the creativity in this…so many cupcake pictures are beautiful with pretty wrappers and piped frosting but that’s just about it. Setting a scene? with them is awesome.

23 Leslie April 12, 2010 at 11:19 am

What a fun cupcake idea! I just saw them today and may make them for Yuri’s Night tonight (am a bit of a space geek).

24 Susan C April 12, 2010 at 1:21 pm

I was directed here from another site and saw this photo and fell in love with it. Such an awesome thing for a kid who is totally into the solar system! :)

25 Maria April 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm
