The fluid in the cup needs something... Hmmm...

We see just a dark blob of brownish (we assume fluid).

Try thinning out the tea so some of the white of the cup comes thru the liquid.

Or out of frame stick a piece of aluminum foil on a length of coat hanger wire. Angle it to catch some light so the illumination is reflected off the surface of the liquid. Clamp the other end of the wire to a light stand. The nice thing about this is the wire is cheap, free, flexible yet firm, light weight and can be recycled.

I think doing either (or both) of these tricks will give you some "life" to the surface of the beverage.

As an experiment open this image in Photoship, add a layer, select a soft paintbrush then paint in a fake soft white barely visible reflection. See if that helps. If you like it then get it "in camera" when shooting.

Maureen -
That is the "before" picture. The cardboard is the white reflector I used to bounce light off of. It is part of the setup :)

What is that cardboard?tear? between the two pics? I don't think it adds to an otherwise really good combo.

Congrats on the new blog. ;-)

Wow This is exactly what I need.. this feels like a special online course for all of us who are very interested in food styling and photography.. I can learn alot by reading what others do ! I've been struggling to find my calling. I'm an architect and yet so very into food and this is what I like.. photography and design of great food!

I've been jotting down some notes about this and i'm adding the napkins tip.. I cant wait for your next post!! keep up the great work!

YAY! I am your FIRST commenter! You've done a fab job on this new blog and I'm looking forward to adding it to my read list. I must say, I'm not much of a foodie or food blogger (I love to eat, but hate to cook and am not a very good one) but I am looking forward to seeing the wonderful photos submitted on here.

I love your tip about picking up clearance napkins too... I am always on the lookout for things like that!

OH, and I SO want your camera! It takes fab photos!! <3
